I recall helping my grandmother make lye soap from the ashes. I can still smell the stuff over 70 years later. I'm sure there were other uses around the farm if I can just remember them.

I also recall being told that if I lied my mouth would be washed clean with lye soap. I took that to mean lye soap was some kind of truth serum. Boy, could we ever use some of that these days LOL.
