Growing up in really small town Louisiana back in the 1940's and 50's my Dad owned a mercantile store that sold a wide range of items, including groceries and meat. At first, it was like all the other buildings in town until he had an Air Conditioner installed.

But other stores were not as big or sold as many items. Most didn't even have electric power, or if they did, it was to a 25 watt bulb, the only light electric light in the store.

Even so, some of those old stores sold lots of stuff to lots of people who did't want 'new fangled' stuff. They grew what they needed, slaughtered enough meat to hold them, and only came to town to buy flour, lard, tobacco, salt meat, and pickles

The pickles were in a huge pickle barrel and usually sold for 5˘ each. Some families would spring for one pickle and pass it around for the family to take a bite. Most could not afford seconds.

I remember eating one all by myself. I can' really say whether I liked it or not, but I ate the whole thing. So it must have been good.

Lots of folks who had money to invest in jars to put pickles in would grow their own and jar them to sell. They usually sold fresh eggs, butter and sometimes, a smoked ham.

So if no one died from eating a pickle out of a barrel back then I think you'll be safe today. Enjoy it...
