I know this is the Egg forum, but I've really always thought of it as a cooking and idea place.

My view exactly, Staci. I just roll my eyes it when people get their shorts in a bunch over stuff like this. The Joe seems to be a nice little cooker, it's dirt cheap, has a relatively huge grid and it weighs nothing. It is not green. But it's chicken was delicious!

As for lump, I used it (RO) because that's all I had. I lit it in multiple places with a Mapp torch (hardly any sparking) and it was ready to rock 'n roll in no time at all. About the same as the mini. Zippy says he likes briquettes in the Webers so I'll pick up a bag and give it a whirl. Been a long time.

Does your cheapie have a lower draft vent? When I bought the Joe yesterday, I noticed a much cheaper one (square) that did not have an air intake in the bottom. I have used those in the past and they take forever to light.
