I expect, like most, I always seem to have small pieces of used lump left over. Some say those small pieces don't burn well, won't get to high temperatures, on and on.

I decided to do some testing. I used only pieces smaller than a mans thumb to the first knuckle.

In my large, I stirred the lump making all the holes in the fire grate and fire box were not plugged and then added more small pieces of lump. Bottom vent & screen wide open and DFMT off.

I used alcohol, 2 oz on the left of center and 2 oz right of center. Waited 10 to 20 seconds and lit the lump bed.

As with alcohol, starter cubes or oil/paper towel, my egg had the usual temperature spike and somewhat quick temperature drop, then the slower climb to cooking temperature.

First the 750° spike, then the fall back down to 220°. Closed the screen and then closed the slider to about about 3/8" open. DFMT, slider closed and petals open about 1/2 open. In 7-1/2 minutes the large was back up to 300° and stable. Ready to cook in 11 minutes from ignition. Not bad at all.

Now to see what those small pieces of lump do and what temperature they can hold. Never used a wiggle rob or stirred the lump.

I removed the DFMT and fully opened the slider, I don't recall if I left the screen open or closed.

7 minutes later here was the result.

The flame up was due to the dome being open when taking the pictures.

Don't toss the small stuff away.
